Chapter 6 Summary

So you have reached the last chapter of the book.  This is where the book comes to a dramatic end.

Here are the main events of Chapter 6 and then a sweet video to show you the ending of the book.

• The chapter starts off with Lennie in the woods next to the pond where we first met Lennie and George.  Lennie is hiding in the bush since George told him to run there if anything went bad.  He sits and waits for George pondering if he should just go live in the caves.

• Lennie then starts to see Aunt Clara.  Aunt Clara tells Lennie that he didn't care about George and no matter how many nice things George did for Lennie, Lennie would not be satistfied.  Lennie tells Aunt Clara he knows, but Aunt Clara keeps pushing it.  She eventually leaves Lennie's thoughts.

• Once Aunt Clara leaves, Lennie sees a gigantic rabbit.  The rabbit tells Lennie that he isn't good enough to tend to rabbits because Lennie would forget them and let them go hungry.  Lennie tries to tell the rabbit he won't forget, but the rabbit doesn't care and tells him that George will beat him with a stick.  Lennie says George would never do that.  George then enters into the scene and the rabbit leaves Lennie's brain.

• George then starts asking Lennie what he was yelling about and Lennie asks George if he will ever leave him.  George tells him no.  We then find out that Lennie forgot what just happened between him and Curley's wife.  Lennie asks George to remind him of their dream and George tells him.

• George then asks Lennie to take off his hat and look across the river.  George then pulls out Carlson's Luger and points it at the back of Lennie's head.  As this is going on George is telling Lennie how there life is going to be in a month.  George can't pull himself together to shoot Lennie until he hears all the men coming from outside the woods.  As the voices got closer, George pulled the trigger and Lennie died.

• The men hear the sound of the gun and come rushing towards George.  George ended up throwing the gun and then started staring at his hand.  Slim comes down to George and comforts him.  Carlson asks George how he did it and George says he stole the gun from him and shot Lennie in the back of the head.  Slim and George then go and get a drink and the book ends with Carlson asking Curley, "Now what the hell ya suppose is eatin' them two guys?"
